CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT (iure sanguinis) – [English version]

CITIZENSHIP BY Descent ( IURE SANGUINIS) ART. 1 L.91/92

Those who wish to apply for the recognition of Italian citizenship with this Consular Chancellery according to art. 1 of Law 91/92 must present the originals of the following documents duly legalized/ apostilled and accompanied by an Italian translation.

For each person belonging to the line of descent i.e. from the ancestor (the person  who was born in Italy and later emigrated abroad) all the way through the applicant himself, the following documents are necessary:

  • Birth certificate mentioning maternity and paternity 

IMPORTANT: where it is not possible to find the ancestor’s birth certificate because the birth of the latter occurred in a period prior to the establishment of the civil status registers in a specific municipality or because these registers were lost due to a fire , it will be possible to present the original of the baptismal certificate issued by the competent parish/diocese.

  • Full marriage certificate
  • Divorce deed (if applicable)
  • Death certificate (if applicable)

IMPORTANT : in reference to the ancestor, i.e. the first person in the line of descent, it will also be necessary to produce “the negative naturalization certificate” duly legalized/ apostilled and translated into Italian, issued by the competent authorities of the country of emigration. This document must mention all changes in names and/or surnames that have occurred over time.

Once in possession of all the documentation mentioned above, duly legalized/ apostilled and translated into Italian, everything must be sent by postal mail to the address indicated below together with :

Once the dossier has been received, the applicant will be contacted by telephone or e-mail in order to fix an appointment on site with the citizenship office for the payment via Bancontact of the consular fee of 300 euros (necessary for the processing of the request and the analysis of the documentation), for the signature of the 3 forms and for the legalization of any translation carried out in Belgium by one of our sworn-in translators .

The payment of the consular tax does not in any way guarantee the recognition of Italian citizenship.

IMPORTANT: Argentine citizens, the documents relating to the descent may be presented with a digital apostille and be extracted from the GEDO platform but will be considered valid for the purposes of your application for recognition of Italian citizenship only if the latter can be verified through the official websites of the Argentine government and only if the signature of the issuing authority corresponds to the one indicated on the apostille .
